MODIS measures the photosynthetic activity of land and marine plants (phytoplankton) to yield better estimates of how much of the greenhouse gas is being absorbed and used in plant productivity. MODIS is ideal for monitoring large-scale changes in the biosphere that are yielding new insights into the workings of the global carbon cycle. MODIS helps scientists determine the amount of water vapor in a column of the atmosphere and the vertical distribution of temperature and water vapor-measurements crucial to understanding Earth’s climate system. Aerosols enter the atmosphere from manmade sources like pollution and biomass burning and natural sources like dust storms, volcanic eruptions, and forest fires. MODIS also measures the properties of aerosols-tiny liquid or solid particles in the atmosphere. In addition to recording the frequency and distribution of cloud cover, MODIS measures the properties of clouds such as the distribution and size of cloud droplets in both liquid water and ice clouds. This wide spatial coverage enables MODIS, together with MISR and CERES, to help scientists determine the impact of clouds and aerosols on the Earth’s energy budget. For instance, the sensor measures the percent of the planet’s surface that is covered by clouds almost every day. Consequently, MODIS tracks a wider array of the earth’s vital signs than any other Terra sensor. They may be off by a few percent which may be acceptable for some applications.With its sweeping 2,330-km-wide viewing swath, MODIS sees every point on our world every 1-2 days in 36 discrete spectral bands. Remember that the lengths determined this way are not survey accuracy and are as accurate as the care involved in measuring lengths. Delete than line and any nodes at the end points.

The Length (scaled) of the pipe should be nearly the same as the length of the scale line.

This can be checked by drawing a pipe on top of the scale line in the background image. The image will appear at the correct (approximate) scale.For example, the scale factor was (2.553) to the Y value for the top left corner becomes 822 x 2.553 = 2099. Instead multiply the values in the two rightmost (image) columns by the scale factor determined in step 6 to obtain the values in the two leftmost columns (drawing).

This time do not accept the default scale.

Reopen the background image using View > Background > New > New File.

Close the background image by selecting View > Background > Delete and Yes.

(In this example it is 391.61 ft.) This means that the background needs to be scaled by a factor of 1000/391.61 = 2.553. Look at the Length (scaled) property of that line. Draw a pipe as close the exact length as the scale line as possible.

The background file will open in the model with the scale line showing.

Write down the values in the first two columns of the lower pane and Select OK.

You will see the default image properties for this drawing.

Import the file as a background using View > Background > New > New File.

Open WaterGEMS and create a new hydraulic model.

Save the image using File > Save > Save Image and assign the image a file name.Usually a 1000 ft is a good length as shown below: Using Tools > Ruler, draw a straight line with a known length (in an inconspicuous part of the image). Make certain that the view is vertical straight down (not tilted). Open the Google Earth image and zoom to the extents that will be used for the model.
